Supporting your child with the dangers of 'Vaping'

A 'Vape' is a form of electronic cigarette device that stimulates tobacco smoking. It consists of an atomizer, a power source such as a battery, and a container such as a cartridge or tank filled with liquid. Instead of smoke, the user inhales vapour. Whilst vaping is less harmful than smoking, because vapour contains fewer toxins than cigarette smoke. However, it is still harmful and contains traces of toxins not found in cigarette smoke.

The most recent Student Health and Wellbeing Survey carried out by Cardiff University shows that the number of vaping devices being used by children and young people is rising. The use of flavours makes vaping an easy and desirable alternative to traditional cigarettes. However, they can be perceived by children as having a lower risk on health. Educating your child to understand the health risks associated with this activity will support them to make informed decisions about their usage.

In this section, you will find links to useful websites and resources that suggest ways of educating your child on the risks of vaping.

  • Public Health Wales are the national public health agency in Wales. They work to protect and improve health and well-being and reduce health inequalities for the people of Wales. Publich Health Wales have also released specific information and guidance on vaping for secondary-aged students in Wales.

  • Action on smoking and health Wales (ASH) is the leading organisation working towards a smoke free Wales. Established in 1976, ASH Wales has long worked to raise awareness of the health, social and economic effects of smoking. They work closely with communities, young people and partner organisations across Wales to create change for the better.

  • Action for Children protects and supports children and young people, providing practical and emotional care and support, ensuring their voices are heard, and campaigning to bring lasting improvements to their lives.
