Sixth Form Curriculum

The majority of courses offered with SJB Sixth Form are Level 3 courses (AS/A Level or Level 3 vocational courses). A breadth of knowledge and understanding is required for students to cope with the demands of all Level 3 courses. In addition, students need to possess the necessary literacy and numeracy skills that all Level 3 courses require for their content to be understood and applied.

Advanced Level qualifications provide a more traditional route to both higher education and employment. In these subjects, assessment is predominantly by external examination. Vocational qualifications, such as BTEC Diploma or Applied subjects have elements of controlled assessment which minimises the amount of external assessment.

The balance of subjects available to you has been carefully considered and provides you with the opportunity to extend your academic qualifications. The teaching methods are varied and we strive to actively engage and motivate our learners.  To increase the number and variety of courses on offer, some subjects will also be offered in liaison with the Cynon Valley Consortium (CVC) at Aberdare Community School.

In addition, you will have the opportunity to play an active role in school life and become involved in charity events and extra-curricular activities. This school has a strong Christian ethos and we aim to develop the spiritual and moral growth of each student. You will also have the opportunity of becoming a prefect and, in Year 13, part of the Senior Prefect Team, which can provide valuable experience in a leadership role.

The full range of subjects now being taught at the school or through the CVC Consortium are

  • Art and Design;
  • Biology;
  • Business;
  • Chemistry;
  • Criminology;
  • Design and Technology;
  • English Literature;
  • Geography;
  • German;
  • Health and Social Care;
  • History;
  • Mathematics;
  • Further Mathematics;
  • Medical Science;
  • Music;
  • Physical Education;
  • Physics;
  • Psychology;
  • Religious Studies;
  • Welsh; and
  • Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales (AdvSBW).

All students follow the Advanced Skill Baccalaureate Wales (AdvSBW) Qualification, which is a compulsory element as specified by Welsh Government. Students must follow this qualification regardless of the number of AS/A2 qualifications studied. For more information about individual courses, contact Mr Hollidge, Assistant Head (Sixth Form) via email.
