How to Cope with Low Mood

Everybody has times where they feel sad, confused, or worried. These are perfectly natural emotions to experience, especially during stressful times. For pupils, these will include periods of time, such as public examinations or big changes to your life, such as transferring from primary to secondary school or, indeed any new environment. Fortunately, there are lots of things you can do to help you feel better and to help prepare your mental health for the future.

In this section, you will find useful websites and resources that provide advice, ideas, and encouragement to help you meet these challenges. Remember, no matter how you’re feeling, there are always ways to protect and strengthen your mental health.

Here are some of the organisations who may be able to help

  • Heads Above The Waves promotes positive, creative ways for young people to deal with depression and self-harm. They want to make it easier for people to talk about anything that’s bothering them, and to realise that if it’s bothering you, then it’s an important issue, and it’s worth talking about, and doing something about.

  • MeeTwo is an Android/iOS mobile application, featured on the NHS Apps Library, which provides peer-support, expert help, in-built educational and creative resources. The app is a neutral space which allows you to experiment with what it feels like to open up, offering positive feedback and social support which helps build confidence, increase well-being and promote emotional resilience.

  • Students Against Depression provides a calm environment and the resources to help young people find a way forward - a website offering advice, information and guidance to those affected by low mood, depression and suicidal thinking.

  • Mind provides advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem. The organisation campaigns to improve services, raise awareness and promote greater understanding.
